PERSONAL SPACE HEATERS
If you save pennies they eventually add up to dollars. That's what happens when WSU staff and faculty each save a little energy...it adds up to big energy savings! There are many actions that you as an employee can do throughout your work day to save energy including turning off the lights when they are not needed and turning off your computer at the end of the day. During the cooler months on the Palouse the thermostats are set to maintain an average temperature of 70 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit. If your office is not meeting these temperature standards and bundling up isn't enough, then you may look into a personal space heater for your office space. We do not encourage space heaters due to the fact they consume extra electrical energy, may overload electrical systems and pose a fire hazard.
If a space heater is necessary, we ask you to consider one of the recommended energy saving space heaters listed below, which support our campus energy conservation efforts (BPPM 80.85). These heaters only use 200 watts or less compared to most space heaters with fans that use 750 to 1,500 watts of electricity. If 1,000 WSU faculty and staff used a recommended space heater instead of a 1,500 watt heater from Halloween to Spring Break it would save the University at least $50,000 in electrical costs.
The Energy Group recommended guidelines to follow for purchasing your heater:
-
Should use 200 watts or less
-
Must be UL certified to prevent fire hazard
-
Should have an on/off switch on heater so you can easily turn the heater off before leaving each night or for the weekend
Due to the unknown demand, these heaters currently are not available through Central Stores, but information is listed below on where you can obtain your approved personal space heater:

-
Should have multiple settings so that it can be set to a "lower" setting
-
Must be UL certified to prevent fire hazard
-
Should have an on/off switch on heater
-
Use as few watts as possible
Thank you for your cooperation,
