Effective Recognition
Part
of effective recognition is learning to identify behavior that deserves
to be "recognized" and under what conditions it is best to do so.
Managers and supervisors should strive to
avoid "jelly bean" motivation where the rewards are the same for all
employees. If everyone gets the award, the top achievers see no different
acknowledgement of the exceptional job they have done and may grow weary or
disenchanted with their work.
Effective recognition Happens When
it is:
- Soon – Timing is important; don’t delay praise.
- Sincere – Do it because you’re truly appreciative, think about
what the employee did well.
- Specific – Give details of the achievement, relate it to a
specific accomplishment.
- Personal – Do it in person or with a personal note.
- Positive – Don’t mix the praise with criticism.
- Proactive – Don’t wait for perfect performance.
