Incinerator
The WSU Incinerator supports Washington State University's teaching, research and service missions by managing the medical and pathological waste stream in an efficient, effective and safe manner. The current WSU Incinerator began operations in 1999 and is a state of the art facility. The WSU Incinerator operates under a permit issued by the Washington Department of Ecology and is closely monitored to minimize air emissions. As a result of the technology and facility design, the incinerator operates at a high level of efficiency with air emissions less than 10% of the emission threshold allowed by the permit. To compliment the technology and design features, WSU has developed and implemented a progressive Waste Management Plan to further minimize the emissions from the Incinerator. The Waste Management Plan ensures that all other disposal options for medical and pathological waste have been utilized before using the Incinerator.
