Bio Waste Program
We have received feedback from users about the Bio waste shipment program. These are some of the more common concerns.
Boxes are difficult to use.
- Too large – We have requested and received some smaller containers; they are available to try by calling 335-9075 or 335-4530.
- Too Heavy- The Maximum weight limit for the boxes we have been using is 60 LBS the new smaller boxes will have a 45 LBS weight limit, we are charged a stiff overweight fee of approximately $90.00/Box. Departments will be billed for overweight charges after 3/1/08. We are charged by weight (not the number of boxes) so; there is no problem with users loading the boxes lightly. We would prefer that.
- Difficult to separate boxes- We will remind our staff to try to separate the stacks when they drop them at the Bio-waste areas and not leave the ones that won’t budge. It is best to lay the stacks of boxes on their side and try to work them apart. If that does not work; leave them in the pick up area and call us for more boxes. We will send them back to Stericycle.
- Lids are hard to close- If you can get 3 corners to snap that is good enough to stack the boxes and Stericycle will accept them.
Why are there different containers?
- Black (Charcoal) or Red boxes - for Medical Waste http://apps.leg.wa.gov/WAC/default.aspx?cite=480-70-041. This is material that is destined for treatment in an Autoclave facility.
- Grey Tubs - these boxes are for Pathological Waste http://apps.leg.wa.gov/WAC/default.aspx?cite=480-70-041 and any animal tissue and Sharps Containers.
