Washington State University Facilities Operations maintains the buildings, grounds and various supporting systems on our
campus. The following are some facts about our campus and what we maintain.
There are:
- 477 landscaped acres on campus plus an additional 200 acres of not landscaped
- 634 buildings with 10.3 million square feet of space, including housing of 2.3 million square feet and non-state funded facilities of 1.2 million square feet
- 50 acres of parking lots
- 26 acres of playfields
- 30 miles of sidewalks
- 37 miles of streets
- 130 elevators on service contracts
- 522 street lights
- 820 walk lights
- 22 miles of steam lines
- 30 miles of fresh water lines
- 48,000 service calls annually
- 71,358 gross square feet of building space maintained per maintenance employee (UW: 44,248 square feet)
- 1.4 million square feet of grounds maintained per each grounds employee (UW: 399,619 square feet)
- 51,066 square feet cleaned per each custodial employee (UW: 32,421 square feet)
- 13 Chillers providing 12,000 tons cooling capacity
- 6 miles of chilled water loop distribution lines
- 2 steam plants providing 400,000 lb/hr boiler capacity
- 29 emergency power generators (9 MW capacity)
- 30+ miles of 5,000 volt power lines
- 12 miles of 13,200 volt power lines (w/Avista)
- 22 miles of steam lines
- 30 miles of fresh water lines
WSU annually uses:
- 160 million Kilowatt hours of electricity
- 500 million gallons of fresh water
- 800 million pounds of steam
