Washington State University Central Stores Used Printer Toner Cartridge Recycling Program
For inkjet cartridges click here.
For several years, Central Stores has retrieved used printer toner cartridges so they can be returned to suppliers that can remanufacture or recycle the cartridge. Although there is no monetary credit for returning used cartridges, extending the life of cartridges will contribute to a safer, cleaner environment by diverting them from the waste stream. In addition, remanufactured or recycled cartridges cost less to purchase compared to a new cartridge.
Toner cartridges are easily identifiable by their size (most are approximately 11" wide). They are made of hard black plastic and have a dry, powdery substance (toner) encased in them (unlike ink cartridges that have liquid ink in them and are quite compact). Popular printers that use a toner cartridge are Hewlett-Packard Laserjets, Apple Laserwriters, and Lexmark, to name just a few.
Return Procedure:
1) Gather all cartridges into one central pick-up area. Preferably, have the cartridges in their original boxes. Central Stores will still pick up the cartridges even if there is no box.
2) Call the Central Stores main number (335-3695) with the following information:
- Number of cartridges to be picked up
- Building and Room Number
- Name and telephone number of a departmental contact in case we need additional information.
3)
Central Stores usually picks
up the used cartridges at the same time deliveries are made. If you order
infrequently, please call the main number at 335-3695 and a special pick-up
will be arranged.
