University Recycling
The funding from this grant enabled WSU to purchase portable recycling containers to set up 38 additional recycling locations prior to sporting events and funding for staff to set up football, basketball, volleyball as well as non sporting events such as concerts in Beasley Coliseum. The additional equipment and staff has created a diversion of 111,009 LBS of recyclable materials from the final 2 home football games of 2006 through the final home basketball game in March 2009.
During the life of this program Washington State University has provided funding for permanent containers in many outdoor high traffic areas around Martin Stadium and Beasley Coliseum which has allowed use of the portable containers to be expanded into the Stadium and Coliseum. Propelled by the momentum of the grant, and supported by the
WSU Athletic Department, we have been able to develop a successful program for recycling at sporting events that is still growing. Look for our recycle containers at the next event that you attend! Event Recycling Brochure:

In October 2006 Washington State University received funding from the Environmental Protection Agency to increase recycling at sporting events. Pullman Washington is a small Eastern Washington college town WSU football home games (27,000-42,000 attendance) may double the size of the community on game weekends. People come from all over the state beginning Thursday of Game weekends and hundreds of fans take advantage of RV parks set up for football weekends. On Saturdays fans arrive early and meet up for planned gatherings and many parking lots on campus become tailgate parties. All in all, thousands of people are gathering and eating and drinking before during and after sporting events. Events such as home football games overwhelm the existing waste management system and additional service of existing containers is not feasible because of heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic and congestion.
