University Recycling
Recycling at WSU Co-Mingled Recycling Program:
Washington State University has implemented the first phase of a campus
wide recycling program in August of 2008. This new co-mingled process is
believed by many organizations in the recycling industry to simplify the
recycling process which will result in more recyclable materials being
diverted from the waste stream while significantly reducing operating
expenses. With co-mingled recycling, sorting materials is not needed;
people are able to throw widely accepted materials into one bin, that's
it! Materials are collected as they have been in the past, transported
to the recycle facility on campus and made into large compact bales.
Bales then get shipped to larger facilities that have the equipment and
technology to sort through the bales and separate materials as needed.
Glass, cardboard, and white paper is still collected separately in some
locations. Please help us separate these materials when appropriate and
bins are available. Glass bins, however, are not found at every recycle
location, people will find these bins in locations where the University
has identified a need. These changes to campus wide co-mingled recycling
are going to take time, so don't be alarmed if your recycle station has
not yet been updated to co-mingled bins, eventually the bins will make
it to you.
