Gardens: The compost improves soil structure and increases water-holding capacity. It is recommended that 1/2" of the compost be mixed with soil during the Fall. While the compost is a good source of phosphorus and potassium, it is recommended that supplemental nitrogen be added with compost. Nitrogen release will be low the first year if the compost is incorporated into the soil, but will increase during following years.
Mulch: Spread on soil surface to protect soil surface, moderate surface temperatures and decrease evaporation of water. Leave a 6" diameter free of mulch around trees and shrubs to deter rodent damage.
Turf: On established lawns add 1/8 to 1/2" layer of compost. To establish a lawn, add 1" of compost and incorporate prior to seeding and fertilization.
Tree planting hole: Use WSU compost at a rate no higher than 15% of the planting hole volume. The compost is not intended to replace the planting hole soil.
Liming agent - Using the compost will improve pH of acid soils by increasing the pH of the soil.
Other uses we do not recommend - Use on acid loving plants (blueberry, rhododendron, and azalea) and applications involving concentrated use such as potting mix.
For garden use, it is recommended that only 1/2" deep per year, be incorporated and mixed in during the Fall.
